My Medley :: Balancing Work + A Personal Life

Wednesday, July 22, 2015

Happy Wednesday! I'm real excited because I was recently introduced to WeWork, a co-working company based in New York City that provides shared workspaces, community and services in 46 co-working locations and 16 major cities across the U.S., Europe and Israel. What intrigues me the most about Wework is that they offer an ideal opportunity for not only entrepreneurs, freelancers and startups, but small businesses as well.

Wework's Mission & Values:  Building communities to empower people to do what they love - and creative workspaces continue to be a major focus and source of inspiration. Create a world where people work to make a life, not just a living.

I reread the last part of their mission over and over again - not because I didn't grasp it, but because I respect and truly value that statement myself. I cannot stress how important it is to create a world within your life that is worth every second of living, which differs from working to solely make a living. With that being said, I'd like to share a medley of my own experience on balancing work and a personal life.

I recently came across this advice: "Find three hobbies you love: One to make you money, one to keep you in shape, and one to be creative", and that is exactly what I did.

One that makes me money:  My current job. I work full time billing and invoicing at a coffee warehouse, and when I tell people that, they always respond with, "Wow, that's actually amazing! Great for you". But what they don't realize is that I've also spent my summers home from college working there to keep me busy.

I graduated from SUNY Cortland with a BA in Sport Management, would you have ever guessed?! Needless to say, my profession is a stepping stone. And not only is it a stepping stone [until I'm blessed with the opportunity to move on], but it's still a profession. So when it comes to balancing work and a personal life, never resent yourself for not yet being able to reach your dream.

Always be stubborn about your goals, and flexible about your methods. Although my profession does not relate directly to my passion, I still need to make working Monday-Friday from 9-5 comfortable and worth it. I decorated my office cubicle because it's so important to create an environment that represents yourself.

One that keeps me in shape:  The gym. Just kidding. In my eyes, what shapes you as a person is just as important as how in shape you are. Happiness is healthiness. I live under my parents' roof, I can count how many "friends from home" I have on one hand, and I don't go out partying much.

When I do, I go big or go home. Once I graduated from college in 2014, I left behind a great group of friends who live 2-6 hours away from me, in another state. One of them being my boyfriend. I'm often asked "wow, how do you even manage to make that work out?", and honestly, after 3+ years of doing the same ish, I still don't know how to answer that - but it just works. We usually take turns traveling to each others' places every other weekend. It definitely sucks, but with positive attitudes mutually and such a strong compatibility, you manage. I'm a firm believer that you get back whatever you put in.

I've become a pro at long distance relationships with not only my boyfriend, but my friends as well. We've all been on an endless amount of stay-cations, excursions and adventures. Although that isn't as affordable as just meeting for lunch, its worth replacing your daily $5 Starbucks latte with gallivanting a few times a year. This not only keeps shapes me as a whole, but it keeps me sane.

One to be creative:  My blog. Welcome to The Beetique! I began blogging for the first time in November of 2014 and loved it. As an introvert who would rather stencil on a wall than buy wallpaper, sew a romper myself instead of go shopping, and make my own gift to give, I'm truly at peace when I'm crafting.

My blog is a personal way of expressing my interests, hobbies and passions, and visually showing the audience how I do so. I've never dreamed of pursuing a career as a blogger or explored writing as an undergrad, until now. Blogging has made me become a better writer naturally and more perceptive. It keeps me busy rather than have the exact same routine everyday.

The only income I make as a blogger is a life to live, not a living. And I love it.

So how is this all relevant? Although I'm only 23 waiting for an entire basket filled with to-be-announced opportunities thrown my way, I'm working to create a truly happy and authentic life while also making money to live. If you can turn a totally boring workspace into bright and homey, you can turn do the same with anything in life that's dull. Touché, WeWork! Find it, and let it inspire you. You won't regret it!
