Coconut Oil Hair Treatment

Monday, December 1, 2014
You've heard it before and I confirm it to be true - coconut oil works wonders.

I have naturally wavy, thin, brown hair.. and not a lot of it.  I am extremely overprotective of my hair due to how fine my strands are.  I shampoo only 2-3 times a week, trim every 2 months, blow dry instead of straighten, and learn to flaunt my air-dried/no product locks. I was pretty upset seeing how my hair reacted to a subtle ombre.

My blonde bombshell of a friend recommended I try a coconut oil treatment on my hair and leave it in for an hour, two hours, or even overnight. I browsed Pinterest and came across so many pins that called for a recipe to make the mix, the types of pins you pin but will actually never try.  I took my girlfriend's advice, made my way to Whole Foods, and went with Nutiva's Virgin Coconut Oil.  How hard could it be with one ingredient?

When picking up your coconut oil of choice, it is CRUCIAL to look for these key words:

1. Organic 2. Virgin 3.  Unrefined

*Make sure your hair is unwashed, dry, and brushed before starting*

1.  Scoop 1 or 2 spoonfuls (depending on hair thickness and length) into a microwave-save bowl or Tupperware.  Microwave for 30-50 seconds.  Stir until 100% liquid.

2.  Now is your chance to rock the oversized shirt in your t-shirt drawer that you have no clue how it got there. This is an extremely messy process.  The liquid hardens to a solid faster than you think, so you'll want to work fast!  Lay a towel down on the floor under your feet as well as on the counter top.

3.  From ear to ear, part your hair around the back with your fingers and throw the top half up Like Ariana Grande would.  In small sections at a time, dip the ends of your hair into the mixture until saturated.  Place the middle of the section between your index and middle fingers, squeezing them together in a downward motion to ring out the excess oil into the bowl.  Continue this practice until you've reached the scalp, and completed the bottom half of your hair.

4.  Release tied up dry hair.  This time, part your hair around the back from eyebrow to eyebrow and tied up away from your face.  Repeat step 3 for this layer of dry hair.

5.  Release tied up dry hair.  Part your hair into a chunk relative to the size of the baby-bump poof you used to give yourself in 2004.  Tie up on top of your head and repeat step 3 for this layer of dry hair.

6.  Almost done!  Release the last bit of tied up hair.  I like to start from the back until I make my way to the last piece in the front.

7.  Gently massage any excess oil into your scalp, also focusing on any baby hairs around your face that are prone to damage.

8.  Throw all of your saturated hair into a tight bun on top of your head.

Leave the treatment in for at least 1 hour.  I like to leave my treatment in overnight.  To do so, Lay a towel over your pillows and wrap an old t-shirt tightly around your head to ensure heat overnight.

Removing Your Treatment

You will actually feel like you're washing out a conditioner before even lathering your shampoo. Shampoo as usual, really focusing on your roots. I've noticed it takes me two washes to completely get the oil out, so I do not recommend styling your hair straight after only one wash. With that being said, it's totally up to you to use conditioner. You'll survive!  Rock your natural hair, throw a bold headband on, or wear a chic bun until the next time you wash.  Besides, it's not good to shampoo everyday!  You'll thank me once you style your soft, repaired hair after the second wash.

Here are the benefits of practicing this treatment once a week:
  • Controls heat and color damage
  • Maintains strong locks
  • Mends split ends
  • Tames frizz
  • Nourishes dryness
  • Promotes hair growth
  • Prevents hair loss
  • Fights dandruff
  • Obstructs dullness
  • Heals sulfate scabs

  1. My wife has been looking for something to help her hair health. I am really impressed with how effective this coconut oil has been for you. I am certainly going to recommend it to her. It looks so simple to use.

    1. Thank you, it is so simple! Glad you enjoyed :-)

  2. I used this remedy last night and was HIGHLY impressed with how great my hair looks and feels today! Any suggestion on how often to repeat?

    1. So happy to hear that! I suggest once a week until you truly feel you've reached desired results, or once a week routinely. Coconut oil can only benefit your skin and hair, you can never use "too much"! :)

  3. I have used this and love it but I tend to lose a lot of hair when washing after I use this .. is that normal? I am trying to find something that will help stop hair lose..

    1. I find that sometimes this happens to me too. That's because those are the weaker strands that instantly fall out, and we're using coconut oil treatments to mend stronger strands, right?! Be sure to gently comb your sections free of tangles when you apply the oil to those sections, so that you're not tugging those strands when it's time to wash out.

  4. Does it make your hair flat?

    1. Nope! And if it does, it's probably because of excess oils left over. Coconut oil is so thick- so be sure to wash twice before styling to get dolled up.

  5. does it clog the drain when it hardens again?

    1. Not that I know of (so far so good!), I am also rinsing it out with a shampoo, which breaks it down. Coconut oil comes in a solid-form, but it melts so easily that it'll melt as soon as it touches your finger! Love it :-)

  6. I'm really interested in growing out my hair again. I have really straight and fine hair. Never been dyed, I never blow dry, straighten, or curl my hair (it's only been curled about 6 times my entire life which I think damaged it). When I did curl it those few times, the ends of my hair were dead, therefore I had to cut quite a bit off and now it doesn't seem to want to grow back to that length that I used to have and want back. So I am hoping that this treatment will work but from everyone that has tried it that I know of love it and insist that I do it. I do have one question; do you do this every night? Or once a week?

    1. Coconut oil will definitely aid in helping you achieve your desired length! How often do you cut your hair? I recommend getting a trim every 3 months and you'll notice your hair grow like crazy (who woulda thought?). I try to do my coconut oil treatment once a week, sometimes once biweekly.

Once-in-a-blue-moon treatment is better than no treatment at all. :-) Good luck!

  7. I use coconut oil daily in my hair but I've never tried this, I will be trying this out tomorrow night! I'm looking forward to seeing the results! Thanks for the tip!
